Measure girth and body shape
Measure around the widest part of the ribcage with the dog standing, then compare neck and back length to the exact brand chart. Weight and breed are secondary because chests, waists, shoulders, and torsos vary. If the dog sits at a size boundary, follow the maker's guidance rather than automatically sizing up; a loose jacket can rotate or slip during swimming.
Introduce the jacket before the water
Let the dog investigate the jacket, fasten it for short rewarded sessions, and check every strap without forcing or chasing. Keep hardware clear of armpits and joints and ensure the dog can breathe, stand, sit, and walk normally. A dog that freezes, bites at the gear, or panics needs slower conditioning or professional guidance before a water outing.
Perform a controlled wet-fit test
Start in warm, calm, shallow water with the handler close enough to support and guide the dog. Once soaked, recheck straps and observe whether the jacket remains centered, allows a horizontal natural stroke, supports the intended body areas, and stays away from the eyes and mouth. Teach the exit from a pool, shoreline, dock, or boat rather than only the entry.
Match visibility and retrieval to the activity
Bright colors and reflective accents help the handler follow the dog against water and shoreline backgrounds, but do not replace daylight and proximity. Practice reaching the handle while the dog is supported. Use it for emergency assistance as the instructions allow, not repeated suspension. Large dogs may require two people or a planned ramp because the combined wet weight can exceed safe handling.
Control the water hazards the jacket cannot solve
Avoid dangerous current, cold, heat, contaminated water, blue-green algae, entanglement, boat traffic, and sessions long enough to cause exhaustion or excessive water swallowing. Keep fresh drinking water available and supervise continuously. Afterward, rinse salt, sand, chlorine, and debris, air-dry fully, and inspect seams, foam, buckles, straps, and handles before the next trip.
